Oakland Township Passes 6 month moratorium on new oil or gas drilling

OT Board of Trustees meeting 20150714

Oakland Township residents thank Don’t Drill The Hills (DDH) and Citizens Against Residential Drilling (CARD) representatives “for their help in making this issue visible” and “helping our Township leadership”. The moratorium temporarily prohibits any new oil and gas and is intended to give the township time to examine the available options.

The Oakland Township Board of Trustees “moved with unprecedented speed in taking action on this issue”. Here is the time line:

June 10, 2015 – Don’t Drill The Hills publishes news about a property in Oakland Twp leased for oil and gas drilling operations. “OAKLAND COUNTY RESIDENTS SHOCKED to learn that OIL & GAS OPERATIONS may be coming to their NEIGHBORHOOD”.

June 22, 2015 – Don’t Drill The Hills publishes news about a church in Oakland Twp leased for oil and gas drilling operations. “OAKLAND CHURCH (formerly Oakland Christian Church) at Adams and Silverbell Rd has SIGNED AN OIL AND GAS DRILLING LEASE with West Bay Exploration”.

June 23, 2015 – During the meeting of its Board of Trustees, residents and board members first discuss the news. DDH members speak to board members and submit written recommendations.

July 14, 2015  – At the meeting of the Board of Trustees the board passes a 6 month moratorium on new oil and gas drilling.

The next step is a review and consideration of amendments to the Township Zoning Ordinance by the Planning Commission and Township Board of Trustees.
